White and Bright
Opalescence ADA Accepted - American Dental Association Tooth Whitening
One of the many important ways we help you care for your teeth is to help reduce stains and increase whiteness. Teeth naturally darken as we age.
This is not unusual. Over time, staining may be caused by a variety of factors - exposure to coffee, tea, soda, tobacco, and certain foods. Discoloration can also occur because of certain childhood
illnesses, medication, physical trauma, or other events.
We at Dr. Stepehen Buchanan's office know that white, bright teeth make for a better looking smile. But, we want to make sure we use the best, safest techniques to improve the whiteness of your teeth. One of
the products we prefer to use to remove this discoloration is an Opalescence Tooth Whitening System. Another is Opalescence Xtra In-office Tooth Whitening System.
Opalescence
Tooth Whitening System* The patented Opalescence Tooth Whitening System removes discolorations with a gentle
(again, that important word "gentle") sustained release action. This action safely bleaches the stains within your teeth. Most importantly, your tooth structure
remains unchanged. History and research shows that most patients treated experienced some level of tooth whitening. However, porcelain restorations and white fillings do not whiten with bleaching agents.
The Treatment Procedure: Here is how we do this.
- First, we examine your teeth and gums to ensure good oral health. Old
fillings may need to be replaced and/or decayed areas treated and filled.
- We take an impression of your teeth to guarantee a good fit of the custom
made bleaching trays. The thin, soft plastic trays provide comfort while bleaching.
- Once the tray is made, we explain how to use Opalescence bleaching gel.
Most of our patients use Opalescence while they sleep. We will discuss with you how many nights your treatment should take for maximum results. Most patients will need to bleach for
only three to eight nights. In some cases, we may recommend bleaching during waking hours instead and possibly for shorter time periods.
Opalescence is the first ADA accepted tooth whitening system that shows significant whitening within days
. It is available only through us or another dentist and must be used under his supervision. The active ingredient (10% Carbamide
Peroxide) is both safe and effective at removing most stains. It is made by Ultradent Products Inc.
We also use
Opalescence Xtra In-office tooth whitening system.** How does it work?
- Opalescence Xtra offers optimum results in the shortest amount of time.
- We place the gel on your teeth
- Activate it with a light source. It's as simple as that! As Gentle and simple as that.
- You relax. The Opalescence Xtra and our staff will do the rest. You'll have a brighter smile and whiter teeth before you leave the office!
The Opalescence Xtra procedure is normally a painless process. A small number
of people could experience a dull "ache" following the procedure. Taking an ibuprofen will normally take care of this ache and is should not last longer than 24 hours.
In-Office Whitening (1 hour)
The duration of your results depends largely upon you. The old stains are gone.
Now, it is up to you to maintain your good results. Practice good oral hygiene and brush after consuming staining foods or beverages. In this manner, your results
could last for years, If you use staining substances like coffee, tobacco and red wine, you may want periodic touchups every couple of years.
We thought you would like to know what is actually IN the Opalescence tooth
whitening systems. The primary ingredient in is Carbamide peroxide, which has been safely used to brighten the smiles of millions of people worldwide.
Opalescence 10% holds the American Dental Association's Seal of Approval.
